Roles of Databases in Intranet Applications

As stated above, Intranet applications provide companies with the capability of providing value-added services for their customers. Databases serve an integral role in many applications being developed for customer use and to improve the services provided to them. Among the uses of databases in Intranet applications are:

  • Maintenance of customer and supplier needs and preferences so that personalized service can be provided.
  • Technical product information and knowledge bases that enable customers to easily search for and obtain product specifications, pricing and troubleshooting information. This same database can be used by customer support and sales personnel when providing customer assistance.
  • Accounting information and billing schedules that allow automated ordering, purchasing, invoicing, and payment transactions to occur between businesses.
  • Site access statistics, customer demographics, sales trends and tracking by product, region or demography.
  • Inventory information, which can be used to automatically update offerings of online stores and can be integrated with internal ordering and control system.
